Active recovery is not a rest day and is not a training day. It means 20–40 minutes of low-intensity movement — a walk, easy cycling, swimming, yoga, or light stretching — that increases blood flow, accelerates muscle repair, and maintains the habit of daily movement without adding stress to the recovery process. Skipping active recovery and replacing it with complete rest is common and counterproductive.
Balancing Cardio and Strength
For general fitness and body composition, the most effective split combines two strength sessions with one cardiovascular session per week as a baseline. Strength training builds muscle tissue that increases metabolic rate at rest; cardiovascular training improves heart efficiency and fat oxidation. Neither alone is as effective as the combination.

If you miss a week due to travel, illness, or life, resist the temptation to "make it up" by doubling the next week's volume. Return to the previous week's level and continue from there. The minimum effective dose — the smallest training stimulus that continues to produce adaptation — is a much better target during life disruptions than the maximum possible volume. Consistency across months matters more than intensity in any given week.
